What the World Needs Now

A teenage girl ruminates on her experiences living through
one year of a pandemic, and how it has changed the world

I hate the deafening silence
the quiet from the empty streets,
locked doors, and unusual distance.
I lie awake at night
pondering, thinking, feeling lost and disconnected.
When did we lose the essence of humanity?

I dream of the past reality
what feels like a different place, in a different time.
When I close my eyes,
I see a street filled with children playing,
wearing only smiles in their faces

I remember a better time
A time before a piece of cloth become a barrier
that separates us from each other.

We did not lose our humanity,
rather we become more human than ever
because we rediscover the things
that make us alive.
Hope …
Joy …
Compassion …
Resilience …

We are and always have been stronger together.
Together, we can overcome anything.
Together, we can build a brighter future.

I dream of a being alive once more.
