Myself and the World
A Heartfelt Letter to Singapore
To my dearest Singapore,
I am writing to you today to thank you for what you have graciously given me …
You are the reason that I have a safe, comfortable home, a friendly neighborhood full of kampong spirit, and a bright promising future. You are the reason that I breathe the fresh air of freedom and independence, earned with the sweat and tears of your founding fathers. You are the reason that I embrace people from diverse cultures who speak different languages and treat all people with equality and respect.
I am so grateful, Singapore, for living under your umbrella of peace …
I love sharing stories and laughter at our neighborhood street parties. Even Ms. Teo, our Member of Parliament, joins in with the fun and frolics. I salute your flag every morning in school with a thankful heart, knowing that it is you who provides our right to liberty and our way of life. I celebrate your Racial Harmony Day each year where all children are taught about racial and religious harmony in your multiethnic society.
Singapore, you are a little candle shining brightly in the dark of the night …
You welcome your people with open arms and share the alliance and unity that strengthens your caring communities. You stand tall on the principles of democracy, transparencies, and human rights, as the corner stones for your progress. You applaud diversity and differences from where you draw the courage and confidence to be who you are.
Singapore, you are tranquility for me, but still…
My heart aches for the millions of children around the world, living without a loving community nor houses to keep them safe and warm. My eyes fill with tears for the families cowering in war torn areas and for those suppressed for their different views and beliefs. My mind boggles for people discriminated against because of the color of their skin, the languages they speak, or their religion.
You are my home and life, you are my freedom and independence, you are my peaceful place …
Singapore.
I am writing not only to thank you but also to share your inspirational stories of Singapore to the world. If you were to inspire one other homeland, one other family, or just one other person, Singapore, we would make the world a better place.
My love always, Singapore.

P.S. My parents and my little brother wish you well!
